Infectious diseases remain a leading cause of child morbidity and mortality worldwide. Dr Reyes is part of the Global Initiative for MRSA pneumonia (GLIMP) organizing committee, the Latin America Intensive Care Network (LIVEN), and the RemapCAP study. Moreover, Dr Reyes is the national researcher for several Multinational Research Projects in patients with COVID-19, including studies carried out by the WHO, ISARIC, and ESICM. Furthermore, Dr Reyes is the Co-Chair of the ISARIC COVID-19 Critical Care analysis group. Dr Reyes is the head of the Department of infectious diseases, and associate professor at the University of La Sabana, School of Medicine and the director of the Unisabana Center for Translational Science. Finally, he is the intensive care unit's academic director and the academic research coordinator at the Clinica Universidad de La Sabana and director of the research group: Translational Science in Infectious Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the same University.

The IDI Program intends to create opportunities for students to gain new and advanced knowledge about infectious disease agents and how they interact with host cells, human populations, and the environment. Our goal is to improve public health by increasing our understanding of infectious diseases and human immunology through basic and translational research that contributes to developing new diagnostics, treatments, and methods to prevent or control diseases. Because the IDI Graduate Group is administratively managed by the School of Public Health, we follow the School of Public Health application process and deadlines. GRE test scores are not required for the Infectious Diseases and Immunology PhD program.


We strive to promote health by integrating basic research and applied technologies to develop new approaches for the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of infectious disease in humans. This program combines clinical, epidemiological, and basic laboratory research strategies in order to apply these methods to specific infectious disease problems affecting human populations. In addition, students have opportunities to interact with faculty members from multidisciplinary centers involved in global infectious disease research. These include the Center for Global Public Health and the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases. Students matriculating through this program will acquire expertise in not only fundamental infectious disease research, but also learn how their research relates to other disciplines. Students matriculating through this degree program will acquire expertise in fundamental infectious diseases research for which there is demand from academic institutions, local and national government agencies, and biotechnology companies.


Common work experience for admitted applicants: Work experience is not required for admission, but relevant work experience related to infectious diseases, e.g. wet laboratory and/or surveillance work is important for the IDI PhD program. Most of the admitted applicants have strong lab and research experience.


Local antimicrobial guidelines should always be followed. Close liaison with microbiology/infectious diseases, cardiology and cardiothoracics (if surgery is a possibility) is required with a discussion at the infective endocarditis multidisciplinary team meeting.


Co-PI. Currently there are 6 trainees in this cohort: 3 PhD trainees in a unique Implementation Science Pathway in Biostatistics, and 3 postdoctoral trainees. Research topics of current trainees include maternal care and childhood pneumonia, the intersection between interventional cardiology, outcomes, and implementation science, and mixed-methods for cervical cancer early detection and treatment and qualitative implementation methods support for a hybrid Type 3 study of the impact of workplace hygiene measures for reducing COVID risk and risk of acquiring other infectious diseases.


The Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health has a tradition of applying advanced laboratory and analytical approaches to integrated community and patient-based investigations for the purpose of delineating the transmission dynamics and evaluating interventions to emerging and neglected infectious diseases, such as Zika, dengue and leptospirosis.
